NOT KNOWING HOW TO THINK.
“Woah,” Ruby could only say as Damen flapped his wings in quick succession in an attempt to get altitude, “calm down, boy, you’ll give yourself something,” he chided jokingly and the body under him vibrated with the Salamence’s growl. With another succession of quick strokes the Salamence’s red wings caught a flimsy current that allowed it to propel himself forward through the air without much difficulty, but of course that wasn’t enough for the dragon-type. With another grumbling growl that was a warning for Ruby to hold on it flapped its wings again and reached for a higher piece of sky so that while it flew its belly did not brush the trees beneath. Ruby clutched on unsteadily –he had flown with Damen before mostly because it would be both a good experience and something useful to have at hand, but more than a few weeks had passed since the last time he had tried this and he still didn’t quite remember what position he had slid in before that allowed him to easily access the Pokémon’s neck while allowing it the freedom to throw back its head and move around.
Damen had been itching to stretch his wings for a long time and it showed, the dragon gave an experimental turn to starboard and roared happily at the results –Ruby guessed he was enjoying the good weather. The sky was a bowl of blue interrupted by only the occasional white puffy cloud here and there but above all the day was pleasantly windy –the type of wind that kept away the heat. For the time being Ruby let the Salamence have his way gently turning and diving so as to not jolt his rider. The trainer was trying to get used to it –the rhythmic beating of the dragon’s wings, the fell of its leathery hide under his hands, the soft whistling of the wind against Damen’s wings, the smooth turning of its body, eventually he grew used to it to the point were he leaned into the Salamence to provide easier maneuvering and he felt confident enough to encourage the Dragon Pokémon into more dangerous flying. What the pair had practiced was that Ruby would squeeze with his knees the Salamence’s right side and the teal dragon would turn to the left, whereas a squeeze on its left side indicated right.
His crimson eyes glanced around the horizon, squinting everywhere to make sure the weather would remain clear before he decided to go ahead with the flying. “Come on,” he said, clutching Damen’s neck tightly “why don’t we try backspin?” he suggested. The dragon looked back to its trainer, its ruby eyes narrowed to make sure he caught Ruby’s words and for half a second the trainer swore he saw its lips curl in a smile before an appreciative rumble sounded in its belly. Its tail shifted sideways and its red wings gave an experimental flap before it tilted its whole body upwards. With an ease that had Ruby clutching its neck with enough force to bruise the hard flesh underneath the Salamence twisted upwards then around in a perfect ‘o’ shape and for a sickening moment Ruby knew he was facing the ground with nothing to keep him from falling but his own grip and the momentum of the dragon’s flight before Damen fell back and then straightened in midair.
It roared happily and Ruby couldn’t help the smile that stretched his lips –just like riding a roller coaster, he thought before urging Damen into a climb. Gingerly the dragon tilted its body upwards again, using the weight of its tail to allow it a straight ascend. It climbed upwards like it was shot out of a canon and just when Ruby started thinking that gravity was lost in the Salamence its flight started to slow down and with another tilt of its body it began to dive –quickly. Damen’s neck was all preventing Ruby from being whipped away from its back by the sheer force of the winds and he was grateful he had decided to leave everything on the ground –the only thing he was wearing at the moments were his goggles and the clothes on his back. The wind whizzed past loudly and Ruby gritted his teeth to prevent a yelp from leaping from his mouth. Damen’s eyes were lit with determination as the ground and trees rushed to meet them and just before the highest treetops could come into contact with the dragon, Damen straightened out of his dive and short forward giving a chuckle that rumbled in his throat as Ruby’s grip loosened its vice-like quality.
Slowly, Ruby let out the breath he had been holding.
“Well,” he said after a while of the Salamence’s easy gliding “that was… fun,” he finished, sounding unsure of his words. Damen growled his agreement and gave a sharp curve to the left. “But we should head back,” he said slowly and after a moment of no response Damen finally grumbled in response and with another sharp curve headed off in the direction where it had first taken, slowly descending until its belly plated belly was practically brushing against the treetops.
The clearing was large and mostly consisted of a deep pond with shallow banks and reeds growing around the corners of the soft earth. The dragon landed on the shallows of the pond with a noisy flapping of wings in slow strokes, ripples spread from the water and a leaf was thrown back before with a splash Damen landed on the water, roaring a greeting to the Pokémon in the banks. Chevelle gave a shrill cry in welcome, surfacing from the water with a twist of her head –Damen responded by slapping its tail against the water causing a large splash that reached the Milotic. In the banks a Sceptile peered his yellow eyes and cocked his reptilian head, perhaps wondering why Chevelle needed to make such fuzz while the Lucario simply waited until Ruby was looking in his direction and offered a lazy wave with its paw –it was resting in the shade of a tree, its back against the rough bark.
Ruby swung his leg around and slid easily from the Salamence’s back –he only had to briefly splash on shallow water that barely reached his ankles before he scrambled to the bank always under Alex’s curious gaze. Just as the trainer straightened himself the Sceptile rushed to his side and butted its head against Ruby’s shoulder –he chuckled. “Yeah, it went alright,” he assured Alex, knowing the grass-type well enough to be able to tell its concerns. He detached his gaze from the Sceptile noticing that Andre was attentive to something in the distance but a roar made him whip around to look at the banks. Damen and Chevelle had started their very own splash war and he noticed that they were both soaked through –rivulets of water dripped from the Salamence’s wings and open jaws and Chevelle was in no better condition. She shook her head slowly and waved her tail, slapping it hard against the pond’s surface to make water fly in the Salamence’s direction. Ruby could only shake his head slowly and chuckle before a grunt reminded him what Andre was looking at. He turned around and saw that now the Lucario was standing –his ears were erect and alert and its position indicated that it had heard or seen something. In his peripheral vision Alex was standing just as still and looking in the distance before he caught the sound of crunching grass under feet.
