It was still morning when the rumbling sound of a large moving vehicle reached her ears, even when sitting on her bedroom floor and staring intently at the television with images of pokémon dashing around a racecourse playing on the screen. At the sound of the engine Soul managed to tear herself away from the screen showing a very recent pokethlon and scramble up off the floor, pulling herself up onto her shoeless feet as she tumbled over to the window, her caramel eyes widening in surprise. It was a moving van, a pretty big one at that, the engine had now been cut off as it had parked outside the vacant house. That home had been empty for a couple of months now, the previous family had moved out and left to live in a much larger city, instead of this peaceful town which was kind of out the way of any cities. Apparently the father had gotten work at some large city in Kanto and the family had packed their things and moved over there. Ever since the house had been standing vacant and now, it seemed like a new family had moved in! Of course Soul had already known that the house had been sold, in a small town like this, gossip spread fast. The best thing about this new family though, apparently they had a kid around the same age as she was.
Not even bothering to turn her television off, the brunette snagged her hat off her bed, pulled on her shoes and thundered ungracefully down the stairs, earning her mother to yell that the stairs would collapse one day. Soul simply shrugged off the comment, calling out a goodbye as she dashed out the front door before her mother could scream at her for leaving the television on and therefore, wasting electricity and money. Her cute red shoes tapped against the path as she made her way down her front garden path and off in the complete opposite direction from where the new family was moving in. Well she wasn’t going to go off to greet this new kid by herself; she’d have to drag Gold with her of course! Before long she managed to get to her best friends front door, feeling ever so slightly out of breath considered she had bolted over there as fast as she could. She didn’t waste a second though, curling her hand into a fist as she knocked the front door while trying to compose herself, quickly fighting to get her breath back. Thankfully she wasn’t a panting mess when the door was opened by Gold’s mum and with a quick greeting and her telling Soul that Gold was in his room; Soul thanked the woman and walked into the house.
Soul hardly needed to be reminded which way to go, she had been in this house countless times and new the layout like the back of her hand or just as well as her own homes layout. She was quieter going up the stairs than when she had stomped down them at her own house, though she was still moving up them pretty quickly and made a fair bit of noise. Soul would clearly never make it as a ballerina; she’d probably stomp on too many toes. It wasn’t like she was always ungraceful; she was just in a hurry that was all. Finally she made it to the top of the stairs and instantly made her way to Gold’s room door. “Gold!” She chimed, pushing the door open and not even bothering to knock as she waltzed into her friend’s room. Why bother knocking, what was the worst a ten year old boy could be doing? “The new familiy's just moved in, let’s go see what this new kid is like!”

JUST YOUR EVERYDAY SUPERHERO The preteen was gracefully enjoying his current Summer day by doing one of the many things he loved most...sleeping; cuddled up on his yellow themed pillow with droll dripping from his mouth as he was swept up in his daytime dreams. The kind any ten-year old boy would have. Dreams about being the very best, like no one ever was, dreams of rising up to become the number one trainer in the entire world. Within his current dreams he had already gotten his Cyndaquil from the professor, already left this boring, old town; he had even caught his first Pokemon now. Yet, all of that was about to be interrupted as he gradually started to hear the sound of something pounding outside of his dream world. The bubble of his dream suddenly popping when the wooden door swung open and collided with his bedroom wall; which already showed signs that this wasn't the first time the door had been pushed open, as it left yet another small dent within his wall.
Bolting upright in his own bed, Gold clutching his black bed sheets against his chest as his heart pounded against his ribs, droll still dripped down his mouth as he let out a sigh of relief when he noticed the familiar face of his child-hood friend, standing at the doorway of his boyish room with a giddy, little grin on her face. Gold's room was just like any other boys, in the corner sat a small modern day TV with video games of all sorts scattered on the ground around it, sporty items lay strewn across the room, her certainly wasn't the cleanliest of people' but then again he didn't expect a similar-aged girl to come crashing through his bed room door while he was in the middle of sleeping; especially since he'd been up so late playing his video games. The summer days were meant for him to be able to sleep in after staying up late. Unfortunately, it appeared that neither his mom, nor his best friend understood this.
"SOUL!! What are you doing?!" The black-haired boy exclaimed, lowering the bed sheets now that he knew the intruder was nothing more than his best friend. He swung his feet over the side of the bed and staggered to his feet, sleep still having not completely left his body. His hair rose in a jumbled mess on top of his head, a small spark of energy suddenly rose in him when his child-hood companion mentioned the new family moving in. He remembered now, there were some new comers moving into a house nearby the two friends. "Augh! I completely forgot about that." The boy stumbled and tripped over toys as he made his way towards his bedroom window, parting the overlaying curtains to peek outside. Sure enough he could see movers taking stuff out of a large moving van.
Gold tugged at the edges of his pajamas as he hesitated slightly before heading back towards Soul and spinning her around before shoving her out his bedroom door. "Hold on a second!" He commanded, slamming shut his door and proceeding to strip himself of his nighttime wear to speedily change into a more appropriate outfit for outside wear. Grabbing the thin, black comb from his bedside drawer and drawing it through his hair as he effortlessly combed out the tangles leaving it as cleanly as he could, at least he did the best job he could for a ten-year old kid in a major rush to get somewhere.
He finished up his preparations in fewer than five minutes, as he swung open his door and rushed past Soul, "Hurry up!" He stated, grabbing her wrist as he swung around the upper staircase pole and stomped down the stairs, dragging Soul along with him. He was no better than Soul when it came to making a lot of noise as he yelled a good-bye to his mother several rooms away and rushed out of the door. Making his way towards the moving truck, his golden eyes already searching for the daughter of the family who was supposedly the same, at at least close, to the age of he and Soul.

Moving away from a hometown you have spent practically your entire childhood in was very difficult, especially for young Crystal. She disliked these changes, she had no say on the decision to move and it was pointless to argue with her mother. Her mother constantly reminded her that it was not difficult to adjust to a new community and make new friends, but it was easier said than done. Crystal was not the type to spontaneously greet someone and ask to be their friend. Believe it or not, the young girl was actually very shy and only opened up when she had gained enough confidence among her new peers as well as trust. Fortunately, this was simply a phase Crystal was going through at the moment and would eventually become more open once she reached her adolescent years… but this is a past thread, so let us keep the future under wraps! ♥
Anyway, the moving van had parked in front of the vacant house and right behind the truck was a small automobile driven by Crystal’s mother while Crystal was in the passenger seat. Aqua hues stared out the window and she immediately slouched on her seat, feeling dejected at how plain the place looked. Her mother parked the car and walked out advising her daughter to get out of the car unless she wanted to suffocate. How cold! She could not really blame her mother for being so strict, Crystal was whining about moving the entire the ride. As she opened the car and stepped out, she heaved a sigh while watching the movers carry the heavy boxes into her new home. Maybe it would be better if she suffocated in the car, it was way better than this boring looking town. There were probably no kids her age here either.
After spending a few minutes blankly staring at the movers lift the heavy boxes, she put one hand to her hip and tapped her foot impatiently. Crystal stormed over to the truck and put her hands out, ”I’ll carry my stuff to my room,” Crystal announced, waiting for the burly man to hand over the boxes with her name on it. A small grin formed across her lips when he complied and gently placed a box in front of her. Gritting her teeth, she tried to lift the heavy box and noticed her legs tremble from the immense weight in the box. What on earth was in that box anyway? Most likely her computer which included the CPU and that large monitor! The mover asked if she required assistance and Crystal answered by hesitantly shaking her head. She cursed her proud nature of refusing help from anyone and tried to walk to her house with the box.
Taking a one step every few seconds and resting, Crystal felt sweat trickle down her face as she slowly lowered the box on the ground to take a break. A mover took the box from the ground and walked inside. ”Hey! I said I was going to…” She protested at first, but paused when her mother walked out of the house and scolded her. Crystal apologetically lowered her head and listened to her mother lecture her and reminded her of the past accidents which began with her hasty actions that lead to trips to the hospital. Once her mother returned to the house, Crystal folded her arms over her chest and walked back to the moving van, deciding to lean on it while waiting for the movers to finish.
She thought of going to her room, but remembered that it was still empty and probably filled with boxes so it was pointless to go there. Crystal’s lips quivered as her eyes started to water, already feeling homesick. Suddenly, she heard footsteps approaching the moving van and quickly looked up to spot two curious kids around her age running towards the van. A boy and a girl, she felt a little relief and serenity in her heart at the simple sight of the two, maybe this place was not so bad after all. Maybe after she made new friends she would consider apologizing and thanking her mother for moving to such a great place. Too bad most children easily forgot that.
Crystal gasped remembering the tears welled up in the corner of her eyes and immediately turned around to wipe them off with her sleeves. What if they saw her crying? They would definitely think of her as a crybaby and would not even consider playing with her. Crystal shook her head several times, but felt the tears stream down her cheeks. There was no stopping the water works now; she really wanted to make a good first impression but the tears would destroy her chance. The blue haired girl rushed to the back of the van and hid from the two kids before they saw her weeping.

A soft chuckle escaped her lips, clearly amused by Gold’s reaction to her appearance in his room; seriously, he acted like she had never burst it unannounced before. Then again he was still asleep, she had been awake for hours, clearly her friend was a lot lazier than she was on these warm summer days when she preferred to be outside as long as possible, enjoying the summer heat and cloudless skies. And trust him to forget about the new family moving in, she was positive she told him about it last night before they parted ways after a day of playing around doing the usual stuff. So what if she had spent most of her time during the summer spending as much time with him as possible, she just wanted to spend some time with Gold and make new memories before they parted ways on their pokémon journeys. She hadn’t decided when yet but Soul was planning on leaving any day now, having turned ten a couple of weeks ago, Soul had promised herself to hang around for a little longer to spend some more time with her friends and family before she went on that long journey of hers. After all, she had no idea when she would bump into Gold again when they departed and went down their separate paths; Soul could only hope that they weren’t apart for too long.
“Woah!” She yelped out, stumbling as she was pushed swiftly out the door and was met with a door in her face when she turned around. Did he have to be so pushy all of a sudden? A warning would have been nice before Gold shoved her. Thankfully being a boy he didn’t take too long to get ready, though it seemed like forever since Soul was eager to get going and check out this new kid, see what they were like, hopefully they wouldn’t be mean or something. She was just adjusting her hat when Gold rushed out of his room, snagged her by the wrist and dragged her along. She hardly had time to protest that she was perfectly capable of keeping up with him without her friend dragging her; she had been keeping up with his pace for years after all. Thundering down the stairs as well Soul didn’t have time to properly tell his mother goodbye considering Gold just dragged her out the front door, resulting in her just shouting a quick goodbye before she was racing off to the next destination.
Keeping in step with Gold, Soul saw the moving van getting closer and closer, spotting a few men carrying boxes and other house hold furniture into the once empty house. That home seemed so empty and lifeless before today and now it seemed bursting with energy and life. Soul decided she liked seeing houses with people in them, opposed to vacant ones with only spiders as home owners. “Hey look, I think that must be her!” Soul blurted out, pointing her index finger of her free hand towards a girl near the moving truck. From what she could see the newest kid in town had very pretty blue hair, held up in bunches which Soul had to admit, were very cute. Not like she could make fun of her hair style, considering she held her brunette hair up in bunches as well. Clearly the girl had fashion sense in her eyes. To be honest Soul was actually feeling pretty giddy and pleased that the blue haired kid was a girl; at last she could have a female friend who would know the importance of things like clothes and other girly things. Talking to Gold about anything feminine was like talking to a brick wall.
Slowing down her pace, Soul decided she would call out a greeting to the new girl, after all if they were going to be friends she might as well be welcoming and friendly considering she had just moved in. Plus her mother always told her to be polite, reminding her last night that she must be nice to the new family. “Hel-” Unfortunately the blue haired girl seemed to have other ideas and Soul could only watch with the utmost curiosity and worry as the girl dashed off behind the truck, hiding her presence. “Oh..” Her caramel eyes gazed over at Gold in a questioning look, wondering what in the world was going on. Perhaps the blue haired girl didn’t want to make friends with them? “..Maybe she’s just shy?” She mumbled, trying to stay positive on the situation, maybe she really was nervous considering it was her first day in this town. Now what should they do, leave her alone or go over and try and make friends despite the fact that she had just hid from them?

Gold released his grip on Soul's wrist as they neared the large moving trucks. His golden orbs scanned over the bussling area as he tried to sight the new kid in town. Though Gold wouldn't admit it, he, like Soul, was happy to see the normally empty house surrounded in movement and energy as bulky movers grabbed objects from within the moving truck and effortlessly brought them into a house. Even a couple bulky Machamps were helping to carry in some of the larger objects such as couches, rocking chairs, and bed spreads. He slowed his pace as he drew nearer, arm raising up into the air as he waved at the girl with a smile on his face. Her bunched up pigtails reminded him a lot of Soul's, except her hair was a nice shade of aqua and longer than his child hood friend's own caramel locks.
Gold couldn't help but think how pretty she was, but his heart dropped when the female suddenly turned around and lift up her arm towards her face, from his current location it almost seemed as if she was quivering. Of course, being the young boy he was, his first thought wasn't 'shit she's crying' it was what in the world is she scared of. He took the quivering of the girl as a sign that she was completely freaked out by something or another. Maybe she was freaked out by being in a completely new area, Gold's dad had mentioned that the new neighbors were from a place far away, and who knew how girls acted all the time. He could never understand them, well aside from Soul. Actually, he had to take that back, there were so many things about Soul that he didn't understand at all. Like her love for those stupid poke'thlons, he didn't see the point of using a Pokemon for something like that, it was obvious that Pokemon battles were much more exciting and provided for way more heated action. What better way was there on a hot, summer day then to be inside an air-conditioned gym watching two Pokemon of excellent skill (at least most of the time) duking it out on the battle field. Not that the black-haired boy had ever gotten a chance to even do that, the only time he had ever even seen a gym battle was on TV. His hometown was so boring he'd never even seen a real all-out Pokemon battle.
Okay, so he was getting a bit off-track now, it was just how his childish mind thought. Of course, with the whole fact that he thought the new girl in town was just scared of something. He glanced over at Soul as she mumbled a single Oh, her opticals looking to him as if she expected him to actually know the answer to her follow-up question. "She looks scared or something," He shrugged in response to her question, even though the whole she's scared because she's in a totally new environment thing was still a stone-set thought in his mind.
So, unlike Soul, who was weighing the consequences of both keeping their distance for now, and heading over to her now. He just did the thing that kept him from being bored within the next few seconds. "YOU, OVER THERE" He yelled, dashing forward ahead of Soul and towards where the blue-haired chick, holding completely no feelings for embarrassment to those around him, he started to rush towards where she had headed, but his destination was abruptly interrupted when a Machamp stepped in front of his pathway, resulting in a head-on crash landing from Gold, as well as the echo of a heavy object dropping to the earth.
"What the--?!" The pre-teen moaned as he robbed his sore ass, his eyes looking forward as they followed the bulky figures anatomy till his eyes laid rest on the face of a very pissed-off bipedal Pokemon, it's red optics glowering downwards at his fallen form. At least the boy was smart enough to realize his current predicament."I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" He repeated, hopping to his feet, but the over-towering fighting type didn't seem at all happy with the puny human causing him to drop the heavy chair. ". . .crap." Gold did the only thing his mind had to tell him, make a run for it as he re-traced his steps and went around the front of the moving truck and over to the other side.

Only a few seconds had gone by since she hid behind the other side of the moving truck, but to Crystal it felt like several minutes. She briskly used her sleeves to wipe her tears and eventually her tears stopped, but her nose was all red and her eyes soggy from crying. The kids were probably more concerned over the fact that she ran away when they attempted to greet her than the tears in her eyes. Maybe they thought that she was a conceited, spoiled brat who refused to socialize with commoners; however, she did not fit the rich princess stereotype since she was pretty much moving into an average house. Perhaps it was best if she repressed any negative thoughts and stopped hiding. It was time for her to get over the trivial memories of her old home and from now on change her timid way and move on! She clenched her fists and had a determined look on her face and nodded in agreement to her mental pledge.
She then kneeled down and peeked under the truck to see the male of the two kids run towards the truck she was still hiding behind of. Crystal yelped when she heard the boy shout out to her and turned bright red in embarrassment. The blue haired girl felt a little relieved that they were not giving up on her just yet. She would have to thank them later for that. She stood up, patted the dirt off her shorts, decided to ignore the fact that her face still showed signs of her crying, and ran to the other side to greet the kind boy who ran after her. Just then, the boy bumped into a Machamp, who was helping in moving the furniture, and down went the couch it was carrying. Her aqua blue hues stared at the large Pokémon as it looked rather upset with the boy who interrupted his job in moving the heavy furniture. She was still a little baffled as to why a Pokémon was helping in the first place and where the actual movers had gone off to… most likely taking a break while they let their Machamp do the rest of the work for them.
The boy was apologizing to the Pokémon who either had the mental capacity of a Neanderthal and was unable to comprehend his apologies or simply refused to accept an apology from some little brat. The fighter-type Pokémon began to beat its chest with its four arms and roared like Tarzan if he had a berserker mode. Her eyes frantically darted to locate the movers so they could return the Pokémon back in its pokéball but there was no sign of them anywhere. Crystal’s heart raced as she quickly turned around and ran to the other side of the truck only to see the boy do the same but go around from the front of the truck instead. She turned her head to see if the Machamp was chasing after her only to collide with the boy who was apparently too busy running from the raging Pokémon to watch where he was going.
Gritting her teeth, Crystal held her head and glared at the boy, ”O-Ow… This is your fault, why’d you have to go and make it mad?!” She asked him and felt her voice drop to a whisper; her lips began to quiver a little afraid that they would be beaten to death by a Machamp. She did not want to spend her first day in this new town in a coffin! Her eyes watered and she grabbed the dark haired boy by the collar and shook him, ”Do something, idiot!” Crystal commanded the poor boy, still shaking him back and forth. Her teeth started chattering as she heard footsteps on the other side of the truck. Apparently, the Machamp returned to work and resumed its duty in carrying the heavy couch in to the house.
Unfortunately, Crystal was still worried that the Pokémon might just be waiting for them to come out of their hiding place and attack when they least expect it. She clung to the boy and whimpered pathetically, it was a good thing her house was just a few feet away, her mother was nearby and maybe the other girl who was accompanying this troublesome boy earlier had gone off to get help. She just hoped the police would be able to locate all their body parts once the Machamp was done with them, then she could pass on to heaven knowing that her corpse would be in a coffin without any missing limbs. Yeah, she was just being overly dramatic… and the Machamp was no where near the truck anymore. Great!

“GOLD, LOOK OUT!” Clearly her yell had been in total vain and she could only watch as her stupid friend collided into the large fighting pokémon, causing the Machamp to drop the item it was carrying from the truck to the house. Soul instantly cringed at the scene before her, well this was a less than ideal situation to be in, considering her friend had just been responsible for making the pokémon drop something because of his carelessness, now it seemed the Machamp wasn’t very happy that this little kid had made him loose his clutch on the item he was previously carrying, in fact, it looked rather pissed off that Gold had made him drop the chair. And then her friend decided to make a run for it after apologising ten times over. To be honest the large fighting type was rather scary, especially the way it was beating its chest with its huge arms and literally roaring in a wild way. It even made her take a hesitant step back, unsure if the Machamp would actually give chase to Gold who had legged it behind the truck, if it was simply beating its chest for show or if it would then charge at her, considering her friend had ran off and left her in plain sight. Oh crap, she could only hope that the pokémon didn’t decide to go for her, she hadn’t even done anything wrong! Her caramel eyes darted to the truck, she couldn’t see Gold or the new girl anymore, then to the angry Machamp and to the new family’s house. Could she reach the door before the Machamp if the situation took a turn for the worse?
She hadn’t even realised she had been holding her breath while watching the Machamp, hoping he didn’t go off into a blinded rage and either go attack the two by the truck or herself. Thankfully he seemed to shrug off that Gold had just collided into him and resumed back to work. Soul released the breath she had been holding in relief, ignoring that her heart had been thumping a little louder than usual, clearly because she had been afraid about what could have happened, she’d rather not see her friend be ripped apart by an angry pokémon. Even though it was his fault. Trying to push away the aftershock of what had happened, after all if had been a rather close call, Soul took a step forward and silently started walking towards the truck. Even so, she looked cautiously over at the house and the workers, just in case the pokémon decided to make a surprise attack or something, so she would be ready to make a run for it. After all, she had no pokémon of her own so there was absolutely no way she could handle a fully evolved, huge, fighting pokémon all by herself. Going against an angry Machamp would be complete suicide without a pokémon, or you just had to be plain crazy to think you would stand a chance against a creature like that.
Walking very quickly over to the truck and circling around it, just in case of an angry pokémon lurking close by, Soul was greeted by the sight of Gold and the new girl huddled up close to each other. Wait was the girl clinging to Gold, what the hell happened around here? Her caramel eyes glanced between the two for a moment before waltzing over to stand behind Gold, swatting her right hand towards the back of his head with a small frown on her features. “Seriously, are you that idiotic that you can’t you look while you’re running? You could have gotten us all hurt!” She scolded, mostly angry because she had been worried about his and both her and the blue haired girls safety. She wasn’t really a snappy person but just the thought that something bad could have happened had made her release her worried in the form of scolding him. With an exhale of her breath in an attempt to calm her thoughts, Soul glanced at the blue haired girl, noticing she didn’t look so happy, duh, she had just been threatened by a Machamp and had just moved into a strange town! Offering the girl a small and warm smile, Soul took her attention off Gold and placed it on her. “Are you alright? It’s okay, the Machamp didn’t even bother giving chase so I don’t think it was really that mad..” But then what did she know, she wasn’t exactly a pokémon professor like Professor Elm who lived in town. “I’m Soul by the way.”

Pounding footsteps stumbling around the head of the van and yet another lack of attention to even more of his surroundings brought Gold into yet another crashing halt, this time with a less muscular figure. He let out a yelp of surprise as he staggered to keep his balance, grabbing at the sleek side of the moving van; he managed to put enough weight against it to keep his balance, he let out a pre-puberty screech as the flaming warmth of the truck, under direct source of the sun, seeped through his palm. The preteen waved his fingers painfully as his golden orbs adjusting to look over his collision partner. Her body was quivering slightly and she didn't look at all happy with him, his gaze was completely oblivious to the wet streaks that still remained as lines down her cheeks, all he saw was the quiver and the glare. "Kind of a rough start," He patted his yellow and black pants as the heat slowly began to leave his hand, then bringing up his un-heated hand up to his head to ruffle his hat-less head with one of his hands, dragging his fingers through the black locks of hair. His dual-colored hat was not set atop his head like usual as he forgot it on his bedstand during his haste to leave the house, and it felt weird to feel the rush of wind over his head.
He brought his hand back down to his side as his face cringed when she blamed him for the sudden mishap, "What do you mean it's my fault, I-" He began, but his voice trailed off as her lips began to quiver. Oh Arceus, was she going to cry? No, don't cry. He reached his hands out toward her, as if he was about to do something to keep her from crying, although there wasn't really much he thought he could do, but instead it was the blue-haired female who made the first move, clutching hold of his collar and shaking him violently. He clutched at her lower arms as he tried to release himself from her grasp, dang, girls were a lot stronger than they seemed. Do something, idiot. The words flowed through his ears smoothly, but there was little he could do while he was being shaken around by this blue-haired female. "Chill out, it's fine." Gold made an attempt at reassurance, but rather it actually worked or not was unsure to the Johto trainer as the female seemed to become even more jittery. He could hear the Machamp as it loudly picked the fallen furniture up and resumed its work, but obviously this girl didn't think the same thing as she clung to his shirt, whimpering like a Poochyena without her mother. It was pretty obvious to him that the Machamp didn't have any plans on pursuing after him, and even if it did, why should she be so concerned about it, the situation was his problem, not hers. Arceus, he really needed Soul now, he didn't know how to handle situations like this, and even he had the thought process to know that most of what he said was going to make this situation worse. Could he just be like, it won't come back, or it's okay? That sounded so cheesy, he'd die before he said any of that.
His head rotated to the left as he spotted Soul approaching where he and the girl stood. "S-Soul! Help me out; I don't know what to do!!" His frantic pleas for rescue from the awkward situation merely got him a swat in the back of his head, his face contorted into one of displeasure as he brought his right hand up atop his head and rubbed it softly. The action nothing more than a reflex as he was sharply scolded by his friend, dodging her gaze as he tugged himself out of the female's clutch on his clothing and stepped backwards, letting Soul approach the blue-haired female, listening to her voice as she gave several encouraging words to her. Yeah, stuff like that didn't come naturally to him; he would've just told her to stop being a wuss or something. It was pretty fortunate he had Soul. He frowned at the thought as Soul finally got around to the long-overdue introduction. He guessed it would probably be right to fit in his own introduction here. "I didn't mean to run into you, s-sorry." The pre-teen began, "I'm Gold, how about you?" He gave her a lopsided grin in greeting. Hopefully they didn't start too far off the right track.
